The 5 Qualities to Look for in a Dog Trainer

When it comes to your pet, you want the absolute best treatment possible. Unfortunately, many dog trainers lack the skills and experience necessary to train your dog in a humane and effective manner. As such, choosing the right trainer can be a bit tricky, especially if you don’t know what to look for or how to tell if they’re qualified to handle your pup. By following these five tips, however, you can be sure that you’ll choose an experienced and skilled dog trainer who can get your furry friend on the right track as soon as possible.

1) Positive Reinforcement Is Key

If you’re looking to train your dog without punishment, positive reinforcement is your best bet. A good dog trainer will know how to motivate your pet by using his favorite treats and toys. Having a reward system in place will keep your pup motivated while he learns new behaviors. Your goal should be to have your dog excited about learning with positive reinforcement! For example, if you want him to sit on command, start out by giving him a treat when he sits. Once he’s familiar with that behavior, add in a verbal cue (such as sit!) before giving him another treat. The next step would be adding an action (like standing up) before getting another treat. Eventually, your dog will learn that sitting down gets him treats—and voila!

2) A Training Method Based On Science

Training methods should be rooted in scientific study, rather than anecdotal evidence or personal experience. A well-trained dog is not only easier to manage but also healthier and happier. Rather than choosing trainers based on their reputation or impressive client list, look for those who have completed an accredited training program with a good track record of success. Never leave your dog alone with a trainer you’ve never met before. And trust your instincts: If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t.

3) Build A Relationship With Your Trainer

Any successful dog training program is rooted in trust and communication, so it’s important that you and your trainer are on good terms. If you don’t feel like your trainer is listening to you or is not able to provide what you need, talk it out. You shouldn’t be afraid of pushing back if there are certain behaviors you want your pet to learn or different techniques that could help him get there faster.

4) Training Should Be Flexible And Adaptive

When it comes to training your pup, you want someone who can meet you where you are and figure out how to tailor their approach to your dog’s individual personality. Dog trainers often have different methods, so it’s important that yours is flexible enough (and confident enough) that they can shift gears if your dog struggles with certain exercises or gives them feedback about which ones are working best.

5) Trainers Must Be Reliable

A good dog trainer is someone you can trust with your dog. He or she should be reliable and easily available when you need them. Just like any other person taking care of your dog, a good trainer should have clear instructions from you about what they should do when they’re away from home and how they can best care for your pet while they’re looking after him.
